Some days are better than others. :) This is a beautifully crafted handmade ceramic flute by local Oklahoma artist Albert Gray Eagle. Today, I got to discuss in depth with him how he makes them and tunes each one to a different key, depending on the song that it's meant to play.
Albert's only been working in clay for about 4 months. Previous to a serious car wreck in August (that left him with spinal cord injuries and limited use of his hands), he made traditional flutes from wood and rivercane. After the injury, he discovered a limited ability to make his wooden flutes... I met him in October, during this time of frustration and separation from his craft. He had also just been introduced to the idea of making his own ceramic flutes. Since then, he and his daughter have taken a crash course in ceramics, bought a kiln, found a source for fine Montana clay, and learned how to tune each flute precisely (not to mention developing a knack for sculpting and glazing). When I saw him today, I was so impressed with the development of his art and craft. I can't tell you how much I love process and creative growth.
I work with artists every single day and getting to talk about process with them just gives me a buzzzz...... xx

this week i sent some of my ceramic & jar candles to LA's myrtle. it looks like a really sweet shop with a nice edited selection of well crafted goods from independent designers like dusen dusen, ermie, mcmc, shabd, upstate, and many others... i'm happy that oui candles will be included in the mix. xx

we spent the entire weekend with my husband's family. such a treat. baby nephews & baby sisters & much bigger aunts, parents, and siblings were in town. imagine a perfect saturday afternoon outside on the family farm, three generations lounging in the grass or old metal rockers, the babies climb in sand & pull up huge sweet potatoes from the garden, the patriarch (pictured) whittles, and everyone gets a turn on the old mare. idyllic, really.

workin' on a OUI shop update... gotta churn out some stock and working on a new product!!! this is one of the new 9 oz. soy candles hanging out among my pinch pot collection... it's available in three scents: honeysuckle jasmine, patchouli rose, and cedarwood rosemary vanilla. 60+ hours burn time. safe & sustainable, with absolutely no toxic fragrances, phthalates, additives, or petro-chemicals. xx

* did you know most candles are made with petro-chemicals? paraffin wax and additives blended into natural waxes (soy, beeswax) are made with chemically-engineered petroleum-based products. additives are used for everything from making a stronger scent throw to reducing burn speed and are used in most candles, even "soy candles"... and then you burn it. think about that next time you go to light your favorite candle in your home. don't even get me started on the toxic chemicals in most fragrances. in the name of health and sustainability... xx

i've had a really great couple of days. yesterday was my birthday! actually, i didn't wake up feeling very exclamation-y... it was the first birthday i've had that i thought i could have done without. i mean, super happy to be alive and everything, but not so super happy to be moving on up in my 30's, if you know what i mean. and since i live back in my home state, my mom threw me a family birthday party (with macadamia nut pie & peach cobbler & presents!). i got a lot of gift certificates to the local garden supply, so i can stock my apartment full of large houseplants which i'm very excited about. i wasn't really looking forward to the party or this birthday, but my family really lifted my spirits. it made me grateful to be home. thanks, family!
i've also had a few fruitful dealings in regards to my line. i am opening myself up a bit more, putting myself out there, getting feedback. it's been very helpful & totally re-energizing. for those of us who design or do creative freelance work, it can get really isolated & lonely spending all that time at home (or in your head). although it's been challenging for me to put myself out there a bit, the rewards have already taught me that it's the right way for me to move forward. i get tired of trying to perfect things in my brain before sharing them with the world. i'm learning that things can be different (and i'm loving it already). thanks, world!

finally settling into our new apartment. it's so nice to finally have our own space (it's been four and a half months since we've had our own place...) we've been unpacking & organizing for weeks... it's so comforting to be surrounded by your own special things. i have high hopes & big ideas for our new space. there's lots of light & windows, lots of storage (closets!!!), and little luxuries we never had in brooklyn. we love it. ♥

I'm so happy to finally have my new "OUi ♥ JAPAN" limited edition scarf in the OUi shop! I'm so excited to FINALLY reveal the design for my "OUi ♥ JAPAN" scarf! It features hand-drawn & watercolored Japanese flowers & black stripes on a light green watercolor background.
Samples of the 27 x 60" cotton voile scarf (super light & gauzy!) will be here by the end of the week, and then I'll add it to the shop. 100% of the proceeds from the scarf (and a new candle, coming soon) will benefit the Red Cross in Japan. Stay tuned... xx

sunday started with a couple of estate sales, made a couple of wooden-bead necklaces, and then cooked a yummy lentil dinner (with crispy-fried onions on top!).
my estate sale booty included a couple of great silver & turquoise pieces, a rhinestone jesus pin, a ceramic bowl, a very pretty costume-jeweled necklace, and a tiny "it's up to you" beer mug. man, i love all the weird little collections of things at estate sales...
